Walton Farm Consulting believe strongly in the 3 legged stool approach to farming sustainably i.e. Environmental, Social and Financial.
It is the balance that is the key, if one of the legs is supporting too much of the weight then eventually will fall over. Maximum load strength is achieved when the each of the legs is carrying equivalent weight.
In recent years, there has been considerable focus on the environmental factors associated with farming. New regulations are continually effecting the way in which farming can occur and the paperwork that needs to be place. This has been a challenge for many but part of a widespread change in practise for farmers. Ultimately, we need to farm sustainably or we will have nothing left to farm.
The social or people aspect is very important and often overlooked in the business. Cultural values underpin the way in which people operate within the business and at times of stress the cracks can appear. This could be considered as the ultimate “Why” are we farming?
The financial aspect to the business is the easiest aspect to understand not the easiest to achieve. The farming business needs to make money in order to justify the inputs of land, labour and capital but not at the expense of the other two legs to the stool.
Areas of support include:
